In the end of September Brazilian IMO colleagues organized for the international IMO community an inspiring and rich experience – the program named Desvendar. Entrepreneurs and consultants from Switzerland, Finland, Germany, Russia and Brazil got together in a beautiful little Holambra city to research the question of How to promote self responsibility and autonomous action of co-workers. The program consisted of visits to the companies, common reflections and a conference on the last day of the program.
Brazilian Desvendar means “unveil” the reality, allow to see something new. Within 5 days we visited 7 companies in 5 cities of San Paolo state and observed several management and leadership practices, that literally showed us the future of the organized life.
The first one was self-management units model. People, growing plants from Terra Viva company, nurses and cleaning ladies from Santa Filomena Medical Group, leaders of Veterinary Department from UNIFEOB University showed us how they manage their day-to-day processes with very little if at all any participation from operational leaders. Not only they know the missions and expected results of their units, they also work together to improve the processes on weekly basis with a client in focus.
In dialogues with all these people we could hear again and again, that they are very inspired by this management model. “It made us more organized not only at work, but also in our personal lives”, - told us the cooks from Santa Filomena. “I see the results of my work every week, I see the company as a whole and I learn something new all the time”, - shared a person, who grows thuya in Terra Viva. Such feedback from regular employees sounded very impressive.
We were happy to find out, that our colleagues Marcelo Balazina, Lafayette Parreira Duarte and Josefina Morandin are developing “self-management units” model. In January 2019 Marcelo and Lafayette will introduce the model in Anix Trade Yard, a client of IMO-Russia.
It is always a big question how education can contribute to the development of entrepreneurship. EduK online school from San Paulo seems to find a good recipe. They produce high quality video courses, teaching very practical skills, which people can use not only to learn to do something they like, but also to produce a real product and sell it. Therefore EduK supports regular people in starting their own businesses, preparing the society for the end of payed jobs era, forestalling development of self-employment. The approach of EduK is so successful and in such a demand, that after 5 years of work they have already 5 million clients!
Another inspiring organization we met on this trip is B Corporation. Promoting the new perception of businesses, who should not only serve their shareholders, but more importantly all their stakeholders, B Lab and B Corp develop tools, which enable companies to use the power of business to help address society’s greatest challenges and to build a more inclusive economy.
It was also very important and enriching to see social organizations, who help entrepreneurial people and young people from poor parts of the country to develop and prosper. Estrela Nova organization from San Paulo helps children and teenagers grow and learn in a safe and caring environment in the midst of poverty and dangers of favela’s life. Bank Perola from Sorocaba gives miscro-credits and consulting to local entrepreneurs, who would never be supported by traditional banks.
On the fifth day of the program we had time for reflection and good dialogues at the finalizing conference. We were deepening our understanding of IMO methodology through the 4L model, presented by Adriaan Bekman. We were meeting yet another business – Waschbär company from Germany. Matthias Wehrle, the owner and co-director told us an inspiring story about transition from a traditional ownership to a company that owns itself. Together with Eliya Devay we could connect to the future getting to know values and motives of the Y-generation.
Researching entrepreneurship culture through such trips is very fruitful. It is not only the opportunity to see everything and talk to all involved people. What happens between the visits is very important. Joint trips, talks over meals, seeing the environment of the company, witnessing cultural peculiarities – all this multiplies the learning effect.
Brazil is an open soul, it is about warmth, friendliness and joy of togetherness. But it is also about emotions, hot energy, passion. This open soul worked wonders.
We met people from impulse and family companies who work together on their land. When you meet the founders, when you hear their story, you get connected. Your biographies resonate with each other. This creates trust, connecting businesses and making the world much smaller and friendlier.
